How it all Began ....

resident Nick Howarth

.... It was all started by Nick Howarth.
Nick has been running clubs, festivals and one off gigs for years in and around Wakefield. About  seven years ago, well before it was called the Acoustic Cabaret, Nick ran a monthly concert at The Grove.   It was a nice room but an awful pub.

Nick asked Dave and Moira Hanvey and John Gregson (Grog) if they would play there, as Grand Cru. They said of course, but  would be interested in becoming more involved  and along with another  local musician, Tony Dargan,  started to help Nick to run it.

 Grand Cru

The venue was not attracting people so we moved to the Grey Horse. This also wasn't suitable, but at the time, the Red Shed was looking to promote more music. So, we decided to go there and see how it ran. This proved to be successful , a great atmosphere was generated, and we never looked back.

The aim is for a non profit making venue to promote live music. All the money from the door and raffle goes to pay the guests and expenses .
The music is generally folk based, which does include bluegrass bands, blues players and poets.   Nick provides and drives a PA system with offstage mixing.

Audience

We book nationally known names as well as top local people (many people round here fall into both categories). We have had people like The Tannahill Weavers, Jon Strong, Dave Burland, Stanley Accrington, Jez Lowe, Gina Le Faux, Pete Morton, Steve Tilston, Clive Gregson and many other well known names from the acoustic music scene.
We have coming up, amongst others, Martin Simpson, Dave Swarbrick, just keep checking the site...
